It is time to celebrate the largest and the oldest public museum in europe! Open to the public in 1775 today, La Specola Museum celebrates its 250th anniversary. La Specola, which is part of the Natural History Museum of the University of Florence, started as the personal collection of the Medici family. The museum takes its name from the astronomical observatory tower named Specola. This unique and mesmerising museum hosts a vast and impressive collection.
Of special interests are the wax anatomical Venuses, wax models of naked women posed in old-fashioned poses with half of their rib cages and stomachs opened and exposed to the world.
Get ready to be amazed by an extraordinary zoological collection made of taxidermy, to walk in the anatomical wax hall and in the hall of skeletons, to enter in the green alcove of botanical waxes and to discover a world of beauty in the mineralogy section.
Surprisingly unknown to the tourists, la Specola is quiet and mostly empty, and this adds to its magical vibes, making thus venue incredibly precious.
Definitely not to be missed!
