Opera del Duomo Museum

Come with me and let yourself be transported from the medieval era right into the XXI century in the New Museum of the Opera del Duomo. This is not just a museum: this is the story of an institution that witnessed more than 700 years of Florentine artistic excellence. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo houses the largest concentration of Florentine monumental sculpture in the world. ‘Opera del Duomo’ or OPA, in fact, means the Workshop of the Cathedral and, during our tour you will walk not only through the history of the city, and through the history of art but you will, more importantly, be able to glimpse the souls of the artists that dedicated their talent and their most intimate feelings to the service of the city and its glory. Among other masterpieces, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo holds the original Baptistry’s doors; Michelangelo’s penultimate sculpture, a Pietà meant to adorn the altar, near which, he was expected to be buried; Donatello’s wooden Mary Magdalene.
