The Vasari corridor will be open to the public from December 21st, 2024 after 8 years of restoration. It was November 2016 when, in a short period of time and due to security reasons, the decision to close the corridor was taken.
The Vasari Corridor is an aerial passageway that connects Uffizi Gallery to Pitti Palace, passing over Ponte Vecchio. It’s about 1 kilometers long and offers unique views over the city. It was the year 1565 when the Granduke Cosimo I decided, given the prestige the marriage of his oldest son Francesco and Joan of Austria would bring to the Medici family, to embellish the city. He asked his friend and excellent architect Giorgio Vasari to realize the most spectacular of the projects: an aerial scene that would amazed the international guests and impress the Florentine. The Duke also evaluated the practical advantages of this construction capable to give him the opportunity to move quickly and without an armed escort from the right bank of the city to the left bank and from the Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti passing through the Uffizi gallery and over Ponte Vecchio.
